Welcome to Meru Central Coffee Site |
Meru Central Coffee Co-operative Union Ltd is an affiliation of 34 primary coffee societies. The Union operates within Meru Central District in Eastern region of Kenya . The Societies affiliated to the union have a general membership of over 120,000 coffee farmers and about 700, 000 dependants.
The Union initially was registered in October 1970, as Meru Central Farmers Co-operative Union. It grew and diversified to include; the Dairy, the Maize Mill section, the Banking the Merchandising, the Maintenance, the Petrol Station and Garage, Imenti House and Meru Safari hotel sections.
In order to harmonize and rationalize this diversity of operations, there was need to restructure to achieve the following objectives, viz
- To enable each unit to concentrate on its core business
- To ensure more manageable units
- It was also in line with the government strategy to revive the Coffee Industry and Co-operative sector in general.
- To eliminate diseconomies of scale.
Consequently this exercise was successfully carried out in 2005 leading to the creation of four other entities each serving their specialized roles. The giant Union was hence split to create: -
i) Meru Central Coffee Co-op. Union ii) Meru Central Sacco Society iii) Meru Central Multipurpose Society iv) Meru Central Dairy Union
